Major John Coffin’s Grave- St. Peter’s Cemetery
Route 102, Woodmans Point
Attraction #10
Major John Coffin was one of those larger than life characters who enliven history. Pugnacious and hot-tempered, he traded garrison duty for an active campaign role, fought with courage and distinction throughout the War – and survived at least 6 duels in his lifetime. In New Brunswick, he acquired 6000 acres of land in Westfield, served in the Provincial Assembly and continued to collect his half-pay (a form of pension) from the British Army for fifty-five years. As time moved him up the promotion list, he was technically one of the senior generals in the Army by his death at the age of 87 in 1838.
