The Loyalists built more than 1,500 dwellings in Saint John by the winter of 1783, but none of these structures survived the ravages of time and the city’s many fires. This Georgian-style house, built between 1811 and 1817 by New York Loyalist David Daniel Merritt, is the oldest building in Saint John. It is an example of the more substantial homes built to replicate the sort of house the Loyalists left behind. The Merritt family lived in this house for over 150 years.
