Fredericton, as the province’s capital, rapidly became an important Loyalist centre, and many of the more prominent citizens are buried here. Captain John Saunders, a scion of one of Virginia’s wealthiest families, served with the Queen’s Rangers, and became the Chief Justice of New Brunswick in 1822. Two of his houses remain in Fredericton at 752 King Street and 177 University Avenue. Less aristocratic was Lieutenant Samuel Denny Street, a British officer who became an outspoken activist, abolitionist and campaigner for the “common man”.
